"The Lone Ranger” was an ok movie, but not the best picture of the year like I was hoping for.
It was a comedy action flick mixed with a little Spaghetti Western that played homage to Westerns from an era long gone.
Johnny Depp unfortunately brought nothing new to the table. This version of Tonto was great as in he was an equal to the Lone Ranger and not a sidekick that was sent to town like in the old TV series. Tonto had a legitimate backstory, but why wouldn’t he as Mr. Depp is always the leading man. The sad part is that Johnny has been playing Captain Jack for so long that it has become part of him, or that Tonto really is the great-great-grandson of Jack Sparrow; it was like watching “Pirates” set in the desert.
I think I see where they were trying to go with the Lone Ranger himself, and if put into that context it works; it’s the Clark Kent / Superman personality change. Without the mask, Reid is the cowboy version of Clark Kent. With the mask (and his mouth shut) he becomes something of legend and more than any one man can be. There is a good chance to see that separation of characters become more prominent if the movie franchise continues.
"Hi-ho, Silver, away!" and the iconic music made this movie worth watching for those of us who are fans of the classics. “The Lone Ranger” gets one thumb up, and I recommend you wait to see it when it is released on DVD.
